I’m not sure if you know this, but I wasn’t always a “work at home” mom. Before the pandemic, before Frozen 2 convinced me to quit my job, and before I began to take being an Entertainment Writer seriously two years ago, I was actually a Program Director for an after school program. Yup, I had what some folks call a “real job”. But even then it was super hard to balance ‘work’ and ‘family’ life as a single mom!
And when I quit my job, and started working from home, things got a whole lot harder.
But a few months ago, Apple sent me their iPad Air (4th Generation), along with their Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard, to review. And even though I’m already an Apple user, I had no idea how having an iPad could make balancing both work and mom life easier!
So, here’s …
How Apple Helps Me Balance Work (At Home) Life And Family Life As A Mom
As I mentioned above, I’ve been an Apple user for years now!
To be honest, I got my first iPad YEARS ago, during my early years of college! I had my first “real” internship, when my laptop decided it no longer wanted to work for me! So I bought an iPad so I could keep interning!
But a few years later, when I enrolled into the Institute of Audio Research to learn how to be a recording engineer, and learned I needed a MacBook to use ProTools, I quickly discarded Mr. iPad without even a second thought!
Then a bit after getting a MacBook (and loving it) when I needed a new phone, i decided to get an iPhone because I loved the thought of being able to copy and paste between devices, and having everything synced. My memory sucks, so it’s great having my phone and laptop on the same page at all times.
And then two years ago, I bought my first Apple Watch as a birthday gift to myself! (Mainly to track my steps! But again, I like having everything “on the same page” so it just made sense.)
But with a damn MacBook, iPhone, and an iWatch, I didn’t think I’d ever need an iPad! (Despite wanting one.)
Of course I was wrong!
It’s the iPad that actually made balancing work life and mom life easier!
As a writer, I’m always writing.
And um … if you ask anyone that knows me, they’ll probably also tell you that I’m always working!
Unless you ask Riah, who will probably say I’m always sleeping.
But when I quit my job, you know the one with a stable income, I was convinced that I needed to be working as much as possible so I could keep things afloat.
Which is true … to an extent!
I mean, I’m not JUST an Entertainment Writer! I’m also a mom. A single mom!
So while working 24/7 works fine and dandy for me, it doesn’t work so well for my 9 year old daughter. And she has absolutely no problem voicing that! Which of course usually makes me feel incredibly shitty, because she’s right! I’m ALWAYS working, and it does feel like I never have time to play.
Even when we’re watching movies, it’s probably work related!
But when Apple sent us an iPad to review, and I realized that I now had the freedom to not only work at home, but to also literally work anywhere I wanted, that’s when things changed!
Now, I know, a lot of folks travel with their laptops! I do to sometimes. But you know why it’s not ideal?
Because despite my MacBook only being 13 inches, no one wants to carry this thing around all day long! It’s no desktop, but after awhile it does start to feel heavy.
But the iPad? Man the iPad fits in my MINI book bag!
And if you think I’m joking, I’m not! Here’s my mini book bag pictured below.
You see, Apple’s iPad allows me to get work done, while my daughter gets to enjoy being outdoors! All at the same damn time!
Before we got the iPad, when Riah would ask to go out, I’d spend our entire day saying “in a minute”.
She’d ask if I was done yet, and I’d be like nope, “in a minute”, and before you know it, the entire day was gone! Which of course would make her upset! And rightfully so.
But not only is the iPad small enough for me to easily take outside to get work done on it. Once I’m done working, I can throw it in my mini book bag, and have my hands free enough to play! Or eat froyo!
Which is what we did yesterday!
Instead of staying home and saying “just a minute” all the live long day, I threw the iPad in my bag and we headed out!
We headed straight to Pinkberry for some froyo, and sat right outside of Prospect Park to eat.
Then my daughter, and my “little” sister, who might as well be my freaking child the way I clothe and feed her, spent time reading while I … you guessed it … got work done!
It was magical!
I wrote an entire post before “time was up”, and then I packed up, and Riah got to go inside the park to the swings! Something she had been dying to do all Summer!
So yeah, magical is an understatement! And it felt really good to be able to make everyone happy! Because believe it or not, that “little” sister of mine, who’s currently 22, also complains that I work too much and never have any time to hang with her.
But thanks to Apple and their iPad Air, I got to do both.
Here’s a few other ways Apple helps me balance ‘work’ and ‘family’ life as a single mom.
- Riah can get her school work done on the iPad, while I get work done on my MacBook, so we can “be done working” at the same time. Which gives us time afterwards to hang out.
- We can use the iPad to watch movies, or even play games, together! And of course Riah loves that!
- I use Apple’s Magic Keyboard with the iPad, so it’s easier to draft articles and blog posts in my spare time. Instead of trying to draft things on my phone.
- We can pick up a new hobby (outside of watching movies and tv shows all day long) since the iPad comes with GarageBand and we both love music. But we can also use it to learn sign language!
And of course those are just a few ways we’ve used our iPad over the last few months! But with Fall quickly approaching, I’m also looking forward to staying in and cooking more with Riah. And having recipes pulled up on our iPad should make cooking easier, than running back and forth and checking my phone a thousand times.
