When Disney announced that a new mystery series for kids called Secrets of Sulphur Springs was coming to Disney Channel a few weeks ago, I was super excited! Yes, me! The adult! But my daughter said she wasn’t gonna watch it! Yup, before I could plead with her she shut it all the way down!
And then Disney Channel’s PR team invited us to screen the show in advance, to help promote the show, and I bribed her with press mail (which she loves getting). She took the bait, and now we’re 5 episodes in and loving it!
So if you or your kids are skeptical, and you still haven’t seen Secrets of Sulphur Springs yet, check out my parent review below.
Here’s Everything Parents Need To Know About Disney Channel’s New Mystery Series, Secrets of Sulphur Springs
This Parent Review is also for Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents, Godparents, siblings, and anyone else that may be looking to watch Secrets of Sulphur Springs with kids.
What is Secrets of Sulphur Springs about?
Secrets of Sulphur Springs is about a 12-year-old boy (Griffin) and a thrill-seeking classmate (Harper) who discover a secret portal that allows them to travel back in time and uncover clues about a mystery involving a girl (Savannah) who disappeared decades ago from a Louisiana town.
Is this series kid-friendly?
Yes! I was a little worried that this wouldn’t be as kid-friendly as some of the other Disney Channel series, just because it looked like a creepy, Nancy Drew mystery, but it’s great for kids!
Is this series best for younger kids? Older kids?
Surprisingly, this one is great for all kids! I keep waiting for my 8 year old to jump out of her seat, but nope! (And she’s typically scared of everything!)
Are there any inappropriate scenes or components for kids? (ex: language, songs, etc.)
So far we’ve gotten to episode 5 and there’s nothing to worry about. I’ll have to update this review once we’re done, but so far Disney Channel is doing great!
Are there any positive messages in this series?
Since this isn’t a movie, and it’s a mystery series, there aren’t too many “positive messages”. But there is one, if we spin it a bit, and that’s that the kids are working together to help another kid out, and they also have stated quite a bit that the kids should “just be kids” and get to play. Which, currently during a pandemic, where everyone is at home going crazy, I think that reminder is totally needed.
How scary is the Secrets of Sulphur Springs series?
Um … not scary at all? Which I know sounds crazy, for the type of show this is supposed to be, but it’s absolutely amazing how interesting they keep things, without having to scare the kids!
Is there a ton of violence in this series?
None what so ever!
Was it worth the price for our family?
Okay, so this question is usually for our movie reviews, but since this show is on cable, I figured I’d keep it to say that, we BOTH were like 5 seconds away from buying cable because we love this show so much!
We seem to always miss out on Disney Channel shows because we don’t have cable, so we’re grateful that we’ve been invited by Disney Channel to preview the upcoming episodes because this show is great! So is it worth keeping that cable box on for a few more weeks? Totally!
But of course, it’s different for each family, so keep your family in mind when reading my thoughts. YOU know your family best. So if your family would seriously enjoy Secrets of Sulphur Springs, it may totally be worth it.
P.s – We watched the first 3 episodes on the Disney Now app, which is free, so this show hasn’t cost us a penny extra to watch. But for a split second I did totally think about getting cable so we could see what else we’re missing on the Disney Channel because this is good!
Will parents actually enjoy this series?
Oh yeah! Not only do I enjoy this just as much as my daughter, but my mom is seriously hooked! After watching the 5th episode she threw a fit when she found out she had to wait a whole week to watch episode 6. It was hilarious!
And if you read my thoughts about Mulan, then you know it’s hard finding movies and tv shows our entire family can watch because my parents get tired of watching animation, as well as shows or movies that feel like they’re just for kids. So this one is great for everyone!
Are there any catchy songs kids may remember or get stuck in your head?
Nope. None. But that’s not important for this series.
Although, if kids watch this enough, they may learn the words to that camp song!
Do you need to stay for the end credits?
Nope. Again, this is more of a movie review question. My daughter likes to watch the credits anyway, since now she likes to see the names pop up.
But there’s no reason to watch them here.
Anything else worth mentioning?
Well, of course, there is! Lol
If you’ve read my movie reviews on Popcorn and Tequila (my movies + tv shows blog for adults) then you know I ALWAYS have a ton to say. Lol
So here are some other things worth mentioning …
- I personally think this show is great and a must watch for families. It’s super interesting, even for adults. Yeah, Disney Channel is the reason we get to watch this show, and why we started it in the first place, but trust me the cupcakes they sent us has nothing to do with my thoughts! If I didn’t think it was great, I wouldn’t say it was!
- The show is a tad predictable, but the mystery isn’t! I still have no clue what’s happening!
- I swear to you all these parents are lying and I don’t like it! *laughs hysterically* They getting on my last nerves! (I just needed to get that out!)
- I love the Harry Potter reference!!
- I keep thinking these kids are gonna get stuck in the past one day, but so far they’ve managed not to hurt themselves or get caught (or stuck).
And that’s it!
I hope this review helps you make a decision on whether or not the Secrets of Sulphur Springs series is right for you and your family.
Watching TV shows with the family is supposed to be a fun activity for both parents and kids to enjoy together, but there’s nothing worse than trying to sit through a series that your kid HATES. So I really do hope this helped!
